Overview

Basic Function:

This is a mid-level position responsible for the effective execution of all maintenance work. This position reports to the Maintenance Manager for the use of planning and scheduling all resources to conduct maintenance activities. This position is also responsible for data collection and processing tasks in support of various maintenance operations.

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage work priority, develop job plans, define parts and material, define crafts, and skills.
  • Minimize downtime by managing and allocating the maintenance team’s workload on a daily and weekly basis as well as special projects.
  • Communicate effectively with warehouse, admin, and other departments.
  • Ensure that proper materials/supplies are on-site for planned maintenance work orders.
  • Maintain and improve department metric reporting and analytics.
  • Provide support and planning for all asset compliance activities (permitting/inspections/calibrations).
  • Approach all aspects of the work with safety and food safety as the highest priorities.
  • Engage the proper resources to develop a safe, effective, and efficient work control plan.
  • Principle contact and liaison between the Maintenance Department and operations planning; ensure operations receives professional maintenance service in a timely manner.
  • Review all work requests from assigned area to determine validity and accuracy of information and engage the appropriate resources to set priority. Discuss details of request with originator, as needed.
  • Review work to be performed and determine the best way to accomplish the work with input from Leads, Supervisors, Originator, and Production Supervisors.
  • Obtain and organize all information required for the crafts to perform the work (e.g. drawings, vendor manuals, supplemental instructions, special procedures and other file material).
  • Prioritize, plan, schedule, and follow up on valid work requests.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • Assist the department in the ordering of maintenance supplies.
  • Maintain computerized maintenance system (e.g. work request and work orders).
  • Identify and secure all parts and materials required to complete the work by providing a Bill of Materials (BOM) and any special kitting instructions
  • Maintain spare part(s) usage to maximize turns and minimize use of critical spares
  • Assist the Maintenance Leads in day to day operations.
  • Actively participates in scheduling meetings.
  • Work with Maintenance Leads to determine available resources.
  • Provide total cost estimate for the work to be performed.
  • Manage backlog of work orders.
  • Data Entry (e.g. input data into parts inventory, maintenance management system).
  • Purchase/procure maintenance parts utilizing purchase order system following an approved purchase request.
  • Prepare and submit invoices.
  • Log and file daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/semi-annual/annual completed work orders.
  • Interact with vendors when procuring supplies and negotiate best pricing.
  • Lead 5S of maintenance shops at both plants.
  • Track and schedule all recurring inspections (e.g. monthly boiler emissions, monthly dryer emissions, water softener, back flow preventer, video jets).
  • Determine schedule and planning compliance.
  • Improve Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF).
  • Complete and comply with the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS), Daily Routine List (DRL), HACCP procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Compliance.
  • Maintain a food-safe sanitary environment at all times.
  • Complete records/quality checks with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Escalate any non-conforming product/equipment/material to the appropriate manager/supervisor immediately.
  • Follow Company’s quality assurance procedures and protocols at all times while on duty (eg. Labeling of containers, Inventory Control, PM programs).
  • Promote a positive proactive environment where input from team members is valued and encouraged.
  • Provide back-up support for other roles as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager/supervisor.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years of college preferred; Associate’s degree.
  • Two to five (2-5) years in a pet food or food manufacturing facility is required.
  • Two to four years of practical experience in maintenance field, preferably in food production setting. Experience in maintenance support, including welding and understanding of maintenance related processes and procedures.
  • Pneumatics, hydraulics, motors, pumps and gearbox repairs experience is preferred
  • Understanding of manufacturing process, GMPs, OSHA regulations, and Food Safety.
  • Firm understanding of mechanical and electrical parts and functions of manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the work order system, planning/scheduling, and storeroom procedures.
  • Firm understanding of accounting procedures.

 

Skills

  • Beginner to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point, and Access) with emphasis on Excel, or other spreadsheet relevant experience.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to read and understand materials (e.g. maintenance materials, Work Instructions, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDA), and other OSHA requirements).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work both independently and as a team.
  • Strong math and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be approachable and tactful.
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and pressure.
  • Respected reputation by other employees.
