Overview

This is a mid-level level position that will report to the R&D Manager and EVP of Sales.  Responsibilities include assisting the R&D Team in the development of new products, oversee the implementation of R&D test runs, collect and manage data, update Product Development documents, and various other tasks.  This is an onsite position located at our manufacturing plant in Visalia, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize formulation software to create and optimize dry pet food and treat formulations.
  • Apply knowledge of ingredient composition and processing capability to develop innovative product solutions that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the execution and supervision of R&D test runs. Follow-up with other departments and personnel to ensure preparation work has been completed for R&D test runs. Collect data and record observations during R&D test runs.  Organize and summarize all data following the runs.
  • Follow new product through to launch.
  • Update ingredient database.
  • Create and update Product Information Sheets for sales presentation and label/artwork generation.
  • Work with team to manage palatability testing schedule and shelf life analysis with limited direction.
  • Update and maintain customer specification databases.
  • Assist in qualifying new ingredients and new vendors.
  • Assist in the activation of new formulas.
  • Assist with identifying and implementing cost reduction ideas for product lines and factories.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to execute product development plans and on-going projects.
  • Set expectations, track/communicate results, and create an environment of accountability for results and actions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science, animal science, or other closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three (3) years in animal feed or pet food production environment preferred.

Skills

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power Point).
  • Experience with formulation software preferred (Concept 5).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, analytical ability, leadership strengths, and ability to work effectively with a team.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work both independently and as a team.
  • Excellent time management skills; comfortable working with deadlines and under pressure.
  • Position requires demonstrated professionalism with a dedicated work ethic and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.

Physical Requirments

  • Frequently required to: sit for prolonged periods of time, reach for/manipulate standard office equipment, communicate with various staff and/or reach for and manipulate objects.
  • Occasionally required to move objects weighing up to and including 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl 
  • Occasionally climb ladders and work at heights of 20 feet.
  • Position requires close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, read lab equipment, and detect product defects.
  • Position requires color vision sufficient to differentiate color.

Environment

  • Frequently exposed to indoor/climate-controlled office environment.
  • Occasionally exposed to work near moving parts/equipment.
  • Occasionally exposed to moderate to severe noise levels.
  • Occasionally exposed to chemicals used in the manufacturing process.
